Why is The Girl with a Pearl Earring a masterpiece?
Is she turning towards you, or turning away from you? No one really knows. Girl with a Pearl Earring is Vermeer’s most famous painting. Her eye contact and slightly parted lips, as if she is about to say something, draw us into her gaze. In her enigmatic way, she represents the birth of a modern perspective on economics, politics, and love.
The pearl: this pearl is too large to be real. It is probably an imitation pearl. Vermeer painted it with only two strokes of white paint: one at the bottom to reflect the collar and a thick dab at the top. There is nothing more, not even a silver hook. -- TedEx
